Watch Matchmaker: Mike Ross From “Suits” Should Wear a Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox

I suggested a watch makeover for Mr. Manners K. Cooper Ray, an IWC Portofino 8 Days, which he thought fit him to a T. Now it’s time for me to address a watch issue on the TV series “Suits”. In the show on AMC, attorney Harvey Specter is the best closer in the business. Attractive, knowledgeable and a creative problem solver, he’s got a sharp mind as well as smooth social moves—and he hates to lose. On his team is young protégé Mike, who he’s grooming to move up the ranks. The fact that Mike, an exceptional talent, doesn’t actually have a law degree is another story. Harvey realizes Mike has got the chops, but he has a long way to go. Particularly in watch department.

Harvey got Mike fitted in a tailored suit and Italian shoes but he forgot the watch. Mike’s got to ditch that plastic number that he probably bought at the drugstore. It’s tacky. Especially for an associate at the prestigious firm Pearson Hardman. You don’t want to scare off a client with an off-the-rack polyester leisure suit and garage sale shoes. The wrong watch has the same effect. It doesn’t exude confidence and sophistication. And without a decent watch, Mike’s look just isn’t complete.

Just as Harvey mandated Mike up his sartorial game, I think he must now insist he purchase a respectable timepiece. I suggest Mike wear the Master Memovox from Jaeger-LeCoultre in a stainless steel case with a leather strap and silvered dial, a watch that offers Mike everything he needs. Still a kid, Mike probably won’t be the most careful with his watch, but that doesn’t matter because the Memovox doesn’t have to be handled with kid gloves. It’s durable, tested for 1000 hours before it leaves the factory.

Because it’s durable doesn’t mean the Memovox isn’t sleek and dignified too, something that will be a must for Harvey. With a 7.45mm profile the watch will slip under Mike’s cuff with ease. Classic and elegant, the silvered dial with alpha hands exhibits taste and style. Though the Memovox works as a dress watch, this chameleon also looks styling dressed down with sneakers,  jeans and a polo.

If you’ve noticed, Mike tends to be a tad forgetful and almost misses appointments; the Memovox has him covered. Not only does it have a date, which is totally convenient, but it also has an alarm. Wherever Mike is, whether out running an errand for Harvey or taking a quick nap in the corporate library, he doesn’t have to worry about forgetting an important deadline or missing an appointment with Grammy. He just sets the alarm and he’s good to go. And the Memovox will be reliable because Jaeger-LeCoultre pioneered the alarm for the automatic watch in 1956. Yes, it’s an automatic too. Mike doesn’t even have to remember to wind the Memovox because it’s self-winding.

When you buy a watch from Jaeger-LeCoultre you’re getting a solid from a heritage company that offers great value for the money. The brand manufactures all their own movements and even supply to other companies. They developed the awesome Jaeger-LeCoultre 920, which Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin all used. Yeah, the stars of the high watchmaking world trust Jaeger-LeCoultre.

At $9,900 I admit the Memovox isn’t exactly cheap. Mike is an associate so he’s making a pretty good salary and it’s important he invest in a good watch for his career. But, Harvey being Harvey would probably throw in $5k for the purchase. After all, when Mike looks good, so does Harvey.

The Memovox is a classic whether from the 50′s or 2012.  It should be in every collection.    You are right watch matchmaker, it is perfect with a suit at the office or the weekend with that special lady in the city.

Do they come in chronograph? I think the intricacy of all the dials will make modern office warrior look more sophisticated yet masculine.

Just a good watch and no other jewelry, perfect for a man in a suit (or a man in SUITS).
